Ingestion, Assimilation, Survival, and Reproduction by Daphnia Pulex Fed Seven Species of Blue-green Algae

چکیده
Daphnia p&x (Crustacea, Cladocera) was fed the blue-green algae (Cyanophyceae) Anacystis nidulans, Synechococcus elongata, S. cedrorum, Merismopedia sp., Anabaena flosaquae, Synechocystis sp., and Gloeocapsa alpicola. The green algae ( Chlorophyceae) Ankistrodesmus falcatus and Chlorella uulgaris were used for comparison. Direct observations were made of D. pulex feeding in depression slides filled with the test food. Food labeled with 14C was usccl to determine ingestion and assimilation. Life tables were constructed for cohorts fed blue-greens, greens, and no food, and survivorship (L), net reproductive rate ( R”), median age of death, and intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r) were calculated. In all casts, ingestion, assimilation, survivorship, and reproduction of D. pulex fed bluegreen algae were lower than of those fed green algae, although there were differences among the blue-greens in their efFccts on these parameters. Anacystis nidulans, Merismopedia sp., and Synechocystis sp. showed some toxicity or inhibition towards D. pulex. Although some blue-green algae can be ingested and assimilated by D. pulex, few if any of those tested provide sufficient nutrition to support a population that does not have other

متن کاملStoichiometric controls of mercury dilution by growth.
Rapid growth could significantly reduce methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in aquatic organisms by causing a greater than proportional gain in biomass relative to MeHg (somatic growth dilution). We hypothesized that rapid growth from the consumption of high-quality algae, defined by algal nutrient stoichiometry, reduces MeHg concentrations in zooplankton, a major source of MeHg for lake fish. ...
متن کاملDietary Essential Amino Acids Affect the Reproduction of the Keystone Herbivore Daphnia pulex
Recent studies have indicated that nitrogen availability can be an important determinant of primary production in freshwater lakes and that herbivore growth can be limited by low dietary nitrogen availability. Furthermore, a lack of specific essential nitrogenous biochemicals (such as essential amino acids) might be another important constraint on the fitness of consumers. This might be of part...

A concentration of lindane (y-hexachlorocyclohexane) of 0.05 mg liter-‘, much lower than the 48-h lethal concentration (LC,,) of 3.8 mg liter-‘, resulted in a 25% depression in the frequency of movements of filtering limbs and mandibles of Daphnia pulex in a food-free medium. Different instars (from 2nd to 8th) were affected to the same extent. Animals 6-l 2 h after molting were more sensitive ...
متن کاملAntimicrobial activity of five species of green – blue algae and three species of green algae for Mashhad.
Background & Aim: In this study, is done during one-year research on blue–green and green algae for antimicrobial activity in Mashhad suburb. Aqueous, ether, and methanol extracts from 44 species blue – green algae and green algae were examined for antimicrobial properties against four bacteria (tow positive gram bacteria and tow negative gram bacteria) and tow fungous. Material & Methods: Amo...
